Medical Insurance in the UAE
According to UAE law, health insurance is mandatory for all residents (resident status is granted upon receiving an Emirates ID).
However, enforcement of this requirement is inconsistent, and proof of insurance is not verified when applying for a residence visa.
Therefore, while the decision to purchase local health insurance remains a personal one, we strongly recommend it. Medical care for foreigners in the UAE is provided on a fee-for-service basis, and the costs at private clinics are very high.
Please also note that international travel insurance from your home country becomes invalid once you obtain UAE resident status (i.e., your Emirates ID).
